The miscreant was first securely locked in the Pranger, then lead around the town on a chain attached to the Pranger by the Sheriffs man accpmpanied by a drummer and the town crier who shouted out the miscrients name and offence. Next the miscreant was taken to the town market square and the Pranger was securely locked to a post in the market square for additional punishment and for all to see and mock for the day. This was an effective punishment which left the apprentice able to perform those tasks assigned by his master the following day, and undoubtedly motivated an apprentice to be more conscientious in the performance of his assigned tasks in the future.
